Quincy's Baby Blessing

Sunday was a blessed day-pun intended. In the Mormon religion, children are given a baby blessing in the first few months of life. It's not a baptism like many churches do (that happens when a child turns 8 years old), it is a blessing typically given by the child's father. Her blessing was beautiful and filled with family to celebrate-one more than expected, actually.

Let me begin my story by reminding readers that my mom lives 2,000 miles away on the beautiful island of Maui. Having just visited after Quincy's birth we'd agreed that it was too much for her to attend the blessing as well. However, on Saturday she decided that she simply HAD to be at Q's baby blessing (the very next morning). So with her usual "anything-is-possible" attitude she looked up flights (read: made my dad look up flights) and found one that left in less than 2 hours. Unbeknownst to me, she proceeded to book the flight, throw a suitcase together, and speed to the airport. She arrived at the airport with less than 45 minutes to take-off and proceeded to tell the people in line at security that she'd just received a call that her daughter was in labor ("Well I didn't want them to think I was irresponsible!" -Mom) so they let her cut. Needless to say, she was the last to board the flight, but she made it. Through all of this she'd used my sisters and Seth to trick me into just thinking that her scheme was simply sending a Hawaiian lei for Q's big day.

Fast forward to 11:15 pm that night. I was vacuuming and thinking all the while - oh my gosh, my neighbors probably hate me right now. And then I heard a knock on my door. Oh no. My neighbors are coming to yell at me. Do I answer? I hate confrontation. Oh my gosh, they hate me. I shouldn't be vacuuming. So I peek through the peep hole and who do I see? My mom. With a huge mischievous grin on her face. I was elated as I threw open the door and let her in. What a fantastic surprise! I'd been telling Seth just the day before that I was a bit disappointed that no one from "my side" of the family was going to be there for Q's blessing. She made the day complete with both sides of the family represented.

Quincy looked beautiful for her big day. She wore the gown that her Auntie Lila wore for her blessing (I think we used Lila's and not mine because it was prettier :) and she was wrapped in a white crochet baby blanket made by her Great Great Grandmother Jennie Halliday. Seth gave a beautiful blessing and Quincy slept peacefully through the whole thing. The other priesthood holders in the circle were her Grandpa Doug Bohne, Great Uncle Dave Berezay, cousin John Noll, Bishop Sinkovic, PJ Hazelton, Dave Morris, Austin Lee, and Derrick Leonardsen. We ended the celebration with a little family luncheon at our apartment (picture about 12 people crammed into a 15' by 20' room). It was a wonderful day.
